Welcome To Nigeria

t

Nigeria is located in the Atlantic Coastline in the gulf of Guinea.

The Niger river divide the country into three regions. The Niger River forms the left arm and the stem of the Y. The Benue River forms the right arm of the Y. After the two rivers meet, the Niger river turns south to the sea.

Area around the Niger river has been a home to many people. Hundreds of ethnic groups are divided into linguistic groups, meaning people with distinct lenguages.

Great britain took over areas of west Africa and in 1914 colony Nigeriaa was formed. The Britain while ruling the country gained control of Nigeria´s natural resources. The more valuable where oil, tin and gold. Some people where treated better than others while the British where ruling. The people that where treated better than others where the ones that where willing to cooperate with their colonial rulers. They also get the best jobs and more education. Protestors refuse to work and marched in the streets. As the protestor began to increase, the Britain found it harder to control Nigeria. On October 1, 1960 Nigeria became an independent country.

After the independence, Nigerian`s adopted a federal system of government. Many conflicts between ethnic groups made governing the country very difficult. In 1999 a more stable government was finally elected. Now Nigeria is divided into 36 states, each with its own laws. many cultural differences still divide Nigeria`s ethnic groups. The lenguage is the only thing that ethnic groups differ. English is the country`s official lenguage  and its taught in schools throught Nigeria, but each groups still speacks its own lenguage at home. They are also divided by their religious beliefs, half of Nigerian`s follow Islam and around 2/5 are christians. Many Nigerian`s also folllow traditional beliefs. One belief is that all natural objects such as trees and clouds have spirits. Another belief is that deseases live as spirits to guide and help the living in their journey throught life.
